A Town That Rose From Agricultural Beginnings
With mostly agricultural beginnings consisting of cattle ranches and walnut orchards, the area became developed in the 1950s to 1970s as a suburb, featuring low-cost homes with large lots. The typical home was situated on land of about one-quarter acre. Baby boomers moving to California created a demand for three and four bedroom homes, some with spacious yards, which were considered perfect for families.
Between 1955 and 1970, large companies followed the movement of their employees to this suburban haven. Businesses took up residence in roomy, newly built business parks and the prosperity of the town created a need for new infrastructure to support the residents. Once the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system was put in place, along with Highway 24, the area experienced rapid growth.

After going through the housing crash that affected much of the country between 2008 through 2011, houses in the most desirable areas of Contra Costa County with attractive schools went down in value to a lesser extent than in other areas. Today, median housing prices range from lows of about $239,000 for the average two bedroom condo, to 1.5 million for spacious, larger homes. The average is about $417,000 to $650,000.
Rents for the area range from $795 per month for a small studio, one bath townhouse, to $2,250 for more upscale two and three bedroom homes. Average rents range in price from about $1,300 to $1,800, with $1,395 being the average rent according to quick facts from the U.S. Census Bureau. Most residents report spending about 34 minutes on their commute to work.
