A Town That Rose From Agricultural Beginnings
With mostly agricultural beginnings consisting of cattle ranches and walnut orchards, the area became developed in the 1950s to 1970s as a suburb, featuring low-cost homes with large lots. The typical home was situated on land of about one-quarter acre. Baby boomers moving to California created a demand for three and four bedroom homes, some with spacious yards, which were considered perfect for families.
Between 1955 and 1970, large companies followed the movement of their employees to this suburban haven. Businesses took up residence in roomy, newly built business parks and the prosperity of the town created a need for new infrastructure to support the residents. This is when shopping centers were developed, along with schools, libraries, roads, police and fire services, sewage systems and water systems. Once the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system was put in place, along with Highway 24, the area experienced rapid growth.
