Alameda, California Details
Alameda, California is a unique town located on an island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. It brings together many of the Bay Area’s best qualities. Enjoy the advantage of living in a community with quiet Victorian-lined streets less than 10 miles from downtown San Francisco. For many decades a U.S. Army base, the island offers solitude while maintaining all the advantages of the mainland. The city is a very family-friendly place with excellent parks and schools. The island offers free shuttle service around town which is also served by AC Transit and shuttle service to BART stations. The city is also served by ferry service to various places around the bay.
The island has taken great strides in historical preservation which highlights its nautical past. On the southwest end of the island is harbored the restored USS Hornet, a WW2 aircraft carrier that has been converted into a museum. You can take a guided tour or stroll through the ship at your leisure. The city also uses the Hornet to stage holiday events. For Halloween, the city transforms the Hornet into a floating haunted house and New Year’s Eve is kicked with a major diner and ball. The USS Hornet is supplemented with the Naval Air Museum and the Historical Museum. Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach sits in the heart of city and is a popular spot for lunch or a rest. The kids will love Crab Cove Aquatic Center located nearby.
Alameda restaurants get their inspiration from restaurants located around the world with the majority centered on Park Street in the center of town. Zagat has rated the Burmese Superstar the best Asian restaurant east of San Francisco. Abigail’s Moroccan Cuisine is located in Ballena Bay on the west side of the island and offers visitors beautiful sunsets. After the sun goes down, you can experience a number of popular night spots, whether you are looking to dance at the Forbidden Island, or just want to sit down and watch the game at LUCKY 13. Alameda not only has a number of wonderful bars, but you can also celebrate the creation of fine spirits. St. George Spirits is one of best distilleries in California and for $20 you get a guided tour and a chance to taste their line of liquors. There are also several wineries and breweries on the island. The city also has an active art community with the Alterna Playhouse and the Autobody Gallery which feature artist from northern California. The town has also spent over 37 million to renovate the Alameda Cineplex and return it to Art Deco glory.
